The California-based automaker revealed the Cybertruck last year with the option to place a reservations for just $100. During Tesla’s Battery Day event this year, Tesla CEO Elon Musk revealed that the number of pre-orders for the highly anticipated all-electric Cybertruck pickup were “gigantic” with 650,000 current reservations.
With December quickly approaching and the end of the year right around the corner, Tesla is attempting what looks to be an end-of-year delivery push. After an email from Musk to employees was leaked, we learned the company’s primary goal is to increase production by almost 20%, and end the year with 500,000 units manufactured.
With this goal in mind, Tesla would need to deliver over 181,000 vehicles this quarter. 40,000 more than its last quarterly delivery record. With potentially 650,000+ Cybertruck reservation holders sitting in limbo patiently waiting for their all-electric pickups, it seems like Tesla is encouraging reservation holders to help with their end-of-year goal.
Several Cybertruck reservation holders have reached out to electric vehicle news website, Electrek, after receiving emails from Tesla:
“I saw you have a Cybertruck reservation with us, so I wanted to give a courtesy update and provide myself as a resource. The single motor configuration is currently scheduled to begin production in late 2022 with delivery projected to take place in early 2023. The dual and tri-motor configurations are currently scheduled to begin production in late 2021 with delivery projected to take place in early 2022. In the meantime, a lot of Cybertruck reservation holders have been doing 24-36 month leases on our current vehicles to bridge the gap and experience Tesla ownership! We are currently offering a $1,500 California Clean Fuel Reward eligible for California residents registering their car in-state on top of other California state incentives that you could apply before the end of the year. If you are interested in securing pricing on our current S3XY models, please respond ‘Yes’ and I will be happy to give you a call.”
From the looks of it, Tesla’s timeline for Cybertruck deliveries have been delayed as they were previous expected to start in late 2021. According to the email, reservation holders won’t see their Cybertrucks until 2022 at the earliest. It’s a pretty smart move on Tesla’s part for end-of-year numbers, even if only a few reservation holders end up taking the bait.
