Following the completion of the relaunch of its 5 hatchback in 2023, Renault has now announced plans to follow suit with its R4 model. Renault will follow up its reinvented Renault 5 hatchback by a revived version of the classic Renault 4.
The French manufacturer only unveiled the retro-designed Renault 5 hatchback EV concept last month. With its unveiling came the promise of more EVs to come as Renault CEO, Luca de Meo admitted that there is “at least one more” revival of an old name being planned.
Now, insiders have confirmed that model is the 4 which is slated to go on sale 2025. According to new reports, the manufacturer won’t be rebirthing the regular Renault 4 hatchback, but is aiming to produce a taller-riding vehicle. The original 4 was largely designed to be utilized as a utility vehicle in rural France, so a modern interpretation of the 4 should result in dimensions closer to a compact crossover unlike the sportier, more hatch-like 5.
The revived Renault 4 is expected to arrive in 2025, and will be built on the same platform as the 5, Renault’s CMF-B EV platform. With this we expect the 4 to also share the same motors and battery packs, among other components, as the 5. However, nothing has been confirmed.
With both the 5 and the 4 slated to hit the market within the next four years, some have speculated that the two could serve as replacements for the extremely successful Zoe. However, the Zoe targets entry-level buyers while the 4 and 5 should capture a more style-focused audience. When asked about the possibility of the 5 and 4 ending the Zoe, Renault Group design boss, Laurens van den Acker commented: “Is [the 5] the end of the Zoe? The answer is no, because the Zoe is the best-selling EV in Europe. So it would be silly to stop vehicles that are best-selling in their segment.”
Before the 5 and the 4, Renault is set to debut the production version of the Mégane eVision in 2022. Very few details have been released yet, but Renault does plan to launch a second C-segment EV in 2023, built on the same CMF-EV platform as the Mégane.
