New drone footage shows the start of Model Y production at the Tesla Gigafactory Shanghai.
The start of Model Y production at Tesla’s Chinese plant is a huge step as Tesla only plans to sell the electric SUV into new markets once it is being produced there. Previously, Tesla’s vehicle programs have been launched from the companies Fremont factory in California.
The California-based EV giant has spent the last nine months expanding Gigafactory Shanghai in preparation for the production of the Model Y. Since, the plant has more than doubled in size.
New photos of the upcoming Model Y Shanghai factory surfaced in October. Last month, the Chinese Ministry of Industry & Information Technology registered the made-in-China Model Y. Even more recently, the Tesla Model Y was included in the Ministry’s 12th batch of recommended “new energy vehicles.” With this, the electric SUV is now eligible for electric vehicle incentives in the country.
This week, drone pilot and YouTuber Wu Wa, posted another Gigafactory Shanghai progress report where he captured a decent amount of Tesla Model Y units coming out of the factory. Check out the full flyover below:
