The Volkswagen brand CEO, Ralf Brandstätter, has announced via LinkedIn that the VW ID.3 could soon receive a convertible version. In his own words, such a model “could provide a completely new and extraordinary sense of freedom” for users thanks to its quiet powertrain.
Brandstätter says that VW is currently considering bringing the ID.3 Convertible into production, which has been confirmed on his Twitter account by Herbert Diess, executive director of the Volkswagen Group, who has also taken the opportunity to publish an image as a preview of this hypothetical version.
“We are thinking about an electric convertible, maybe an ID.3 convertible. What do you think?”. In the image shared by Diess, it can be seen that the new ID.3 Convertible would lose its rear doors, although curiously it can be seen that it would maintain the fifth place in the second row of seats, which is usually eliminated in convertibles derived from compact models. This is possibly achieved thanks to the 100% electric design of the ID.3, which allows higher segment habitability.
The project may not have received the green light yet, so the public response to Brandstätter and Diess statements could be crucial to its approval. Should it finally come through, the model would still take several years to arrive, with the most likely date being 2023, the year in which the ID.3 will receive its first restyling?
