Tesla CEO, Elon Musk confirmed today Tesla’s new structural battery design and 4680 cells will be first utilized in the Model Y produced at Gigafactory Berlin. Tesla is expected to start production of the Model Y at Giga Berlin in the second half of 2021. The confirmation came via twitter where the CEO disclosed that Berlin will be the first to see the new structural battery pack technology.
Musk went on disclosing more information regarding the “major breakthrough”
In order for the new structural battery pack to function, it requires Tesla’s new 4680 battery cells that were also introduced during the company’s Battery Day event last month. Tesla is currently working on accelerating production of the new 4680 battery cells at its Fremont factory in hopes of achieving 10 GWh of annual production capacity by the end of 2021.
