Lucid Motors revealed in a press release this morning that it is joining in collaboration with audio tech company, Dolby. The collaboration will include the integration of Dolby Atmos in the Lucid Air’s 21-speaker Surreal Sound system. With this, the Lucid Air will become the first vehicle to feature Dolby Atmos sound.
Lucid Motors Surreal Sound system in the Air consists of 21 front, rear, side, and height speakers that are optimally positioned inside of the luxury sedan’s interior. With the addition of Dolby Atmos, the automaker believes it will be able to deliver an immersive audio experience.
The two companies have worked together while using Capitol Records Studio C recording studio as their reference design in optimizing the Air’s interior space. Director of Music at Dolby Laboratories, Tim Pryde commented: “From reimagined classics to some of today’s biggest chart-topping hits, Dolby Atmos Music has been positively embraced and viewed by the music community as one of the industry’s biggest paradigm shifts within the past 50 years. As a company, we are fully committed to bringing immersive audio to all the ways in which music is enjoyed. Automotive is a natural extension for the incredible experience of music in Dolby Atmos, and we are excited to bring this to the world with Lucid.”
According to the press release: “The audio experience extends to the intuitive design of the Air, including acoustic signaling of notifications, indications, warnings, and all other audio emitted to alert the driver and passengers.”
Using directional sound, the Air is able to pin point the trigger location and play the warning alert from what seems to be that area of the vehicle. For example, when driving unbuckled, the sound would “come” from the unbuckled seatbelt. Lucid also uses its turn signals as an example, saying the signal will sound as if it’s coming from whichever side the turn is iniatied from.
Lucid is slated to begin deliveries of the Air Dream Edition sometime in the second half of 2021 after seeing some delays. You can view the full video announcement from Lucid Motors in the video below:
