Volkswagen has officially confirmed its next ID electric vehicle will in fact be the ID.5. The ID.5 is going to be a coupé version of Volkswagen’s ID.4 electric SUV and it is already in pre-production according to the automaker.
The new vehicle was confirmed by the automaker in an announcement via German media (translated from German):“It’s official: The VW ID.3 and VW ID.4 will be followed by the VW ID.5 as confirmed in a conversation between VW executive Ralf Brandstätter and Wolfsburger Nachrichten. The coupé SUV will be sold out of Zwickau with a market launch: 2nd half of 2021! The first pilot series are already running.”
It’s pretty exciting that the new EV from Volkswagen is already in pre-production and it leads us to believe it could hit the market sooner rather than later. However, some rumors are suggesting the new vehicle won’t even make it to North America as VW has aimed the majority of it focus on electrifying its lineup in Europe in order to comply with fleet emission regulations.
Regulations that caused the German automaker to decide on not selling the ID.3 in North America. However, there is still hope as the ID.4 electric SUV is coming to North America, and with the new ID.5 being a coupe version of the electric SUV, there’s a chance we might get to see it in the states.
No specs were released on the upcoming EV from Volkswagen, but if it is anything like the ID.4, it will come equipped with an 82 kWh battery back with 77 kWh of usable energy, enabling and EPA-rated range of 250 miles.
