After becoming the first all-electric sedan to be approved by New York City’s Taxi and Limousine Commission for taxi use since the first electric carriages in the 1890s, the first Tesla Model 3 painted yellow has hit the road.
The New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission approved the Tesla Model 3 to become a yellow cab in New York City in October of last year. A little more than year later we are seeing the first one on the streets of New York. A step towards the electrification of the 13,000 taxi fleet that is expected to begin service in the city.
A picture was taken by an onlooker and obtained by Electrek where we see a Tesla Model 3 with the official NYC taxi livery in Manhattan. The electric taxi was spotted near Tesla’s store:
It is no secret that Tesla vehicles are becoming more and more popular with taxis, especially in Europe. In the Netherlands alone, there is a 100 plus fleet of Tesla vehicles that have been utilized as Amsterdam airport taxis for the past 6 years.
Although EVs haven’t been as popular in North America, it seems like the states are starting to hop on the trend as taxi drivers as well as taxi companies are looking at the Model 3 for the sheer economical figures.
