During the last years, Alfa Romeo has enjoyed numerous highs under the baton of FIAT and later FCA (FIAT-Chrysler). After the Giulietta compact disc and the 4C sports car, the Italian firm’s range is formed today by the models of the D segment: the Giulia sedan and the Stelvio SUV.
A victim of inconsistent product plans that never ended, Alfa Romeo has not met expectations in markets such as the United States, and global sales are down. However, the FCA merger with PSA (Peugeot-Citroën, Opel) to form the Stellantis group supposes a new business for the Milanese company because it could become one of the flagship brands of the group.
Considered within the organization of Stellantis as a premium firm, Alfa Romeo will try to create grace on impulse that it will receive from its new matrix. The first step in this transformation was his new executive director, Jean-Philippe Imparato, who held a position in Peugeot from 2016 to 2020.
Under his mandate, Leon launched models such as the successful SUV 3008 and 5008, the acclaimed 508-second generation, and the new 208 and 2008, which are available with thermal and electrical mechanics. Imparato will now have the chance to relaunch Alfa Romeo to compete against Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz… and Tesla.
It is expected that in a few months, the manager will present a concrete route for the brand if it is known that the rest of the Giulia and Stelvio is imminent and that the C-SUV Tonale (seated on the Small Wide LWB platform four × 4 of the Jeep Compass, which will allow the use of hybrid engines) will start in 2022.
This model will start the first development in the orbit of Stellantis: a B-SUV built on PSA’s CMP platform, which will begin to be manufactured in Tychy (Poland) in the second half of 2022. This urban whole, which probably derives directly from the DS 3 Crossback and Opel Mokka, will convert to the Alfa Romeo primer with a 100% electric mechanic.
To gain relevance in the premium sector, Alfa Romeo will probably launch the shortest electric models using both PSA (eCMP and eVMP) and FCA (Giorgio, which is currently being adapted by Jeep and Maserati platforms to admit train drags).
Possibly one of the priorities of Imparato in the launch of a new Giulietta derived from the next Opel Astra, DS 4, and Peugeot 308 of the next generation, is the use of the eVMP platform.
