Six-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton will back the new Extreme E electric racing championship next year with the X44 team, named after his premier class car number. The participation of the British will give this incipient competition tremendous media visibility.
This one-make championship is starred by electric vehicles with four-wheel drive and 543 hp of power. Promoted by Alejandro Agag, this competition aims to raise awareness about the environmental problems that plague our planet; in fact, a series of “X Prix” will be organized in five remote locations that have suffered ecological damage.
“It will be fun to play a different role than the pilot. What’sWhat’s even more appealing, though, is that Extreme E will not only raise awareness of some of the most critical environmental issues facing our planet but will also do something about it through working with local charities.
Each of us has the power to make a difference, and it means a lot to me to be able to use my love for racing, along with my passion for our planet, to make a positive impact.”
The Extreme E teams will be made up of a man and a woman. X44 has yet to decide which drivers will race in its colors but has promised to provide younger drivers opportunities.
There are currently eight teams entered in Extreme E: in addition to X44, we can find Formula E teams such as Techeetah, ABT, HWA, and Andretti. However, it has been the presence of the team backed by the always controversial Lewis Hamilton that is generating the most media attention.
