Lucid Air Beats Tesla Model S

On September 9, Lucid will present its first production model, the highly anticipated Air. This electric car has raised enormous expectations in recent weeks thanks to the surprising technical characteristics that the brand has gradually revealed; among them, its fantastic autonomy.

Despite having a pack of “only” 113 kWh of capacity, the Lucid Air recently obtained a range of 56 miles under the strict American EPA homologation cycle, which has been possible thanks to its high efficiency and careful aerodynamics. (The vehicle has an outstanding Cx of just 0.21).

Now, Lucid has published new details about the vehicle’s powertrain, which in its launch version will have two miniaturized electric motors (one per axle so that it will have all-wheel drive) capable of delivering a total power of 1,095 hp. Thanks to this monstrous set, the model has been able to break a world record in the quarter-mile test.

With a time of just 9.9 seconds, the Lucid Air has become the fastest electric car to cover the quarter-mile, beating the Tesla Model S and the Porsche Taycan on the way. The record was set at Sonoma Raceway, California, and was made possible by Lucid’s hard engineering work over the years.

According to the company, its propellants of more than 900 volts are small enough to fit in a regular suitcase, and despite this, they deliver power exceeding 650 hp. Furthermore, they are noticeably lighter than those of their closest competitors (around 45% less than the second-best).

On the other hand, Lucid motors also have an innovative cooling system that allows the stator winding heat to be controlled more effectively, minimizing energy losses and increasing efficiency. The transmission and differential have been fully integrated into an electric motor for the first time, forming a single, lightweight, and efficient rotation system.
