Elon Musk and Grimes have spent the last month whirling the internet into a frenzy over the name of their first child together.
The baby boy, born May 4 was originally named X Æ A-Xii, then, due to California law, the couple was forced to change his name to X Æ A-12. Now the new parents have revealed that their son — whose name has sparked wide-ranging confusion online — has a simpler, easy-to-pronounce nickname.
Grimes shared the name in a recent interview with Bloomberg, during which the Canadian singer also discussed her decision to sell a piece of her “soul” as part of a conceptual art project. During the conversation, the 32-year-old said she calls her new son “Little X” for short.
It’s unclear if Musk also uses the nickname, or if the SpaceX founder sticks to the full moniker that left social media baffled in early May. The day after X Æ A-12 was born, Grimes took to Twitter to clarify the name’s meaning.
“X [is] the unknown variable. Æ [is] my elven spelling of Ai (love &/or Artificial intelligence). A-12 = precursor to SR-17 (our favorite aircraft). No weapons, no defenses, just speed. Great in battle, but non-violent,” she wrote on May 5.

“I think it sounds like the name of the main character in the story,” the singer wrote in a follow-up tweet. “I hope he vibes with that.”
The couple has received a great deal of public attention since revealing they were dating in 2018. A year later, Grimes shared that she met the billionaire after bonding on Twitter.
“I was simply unprepared,” she told WSJ magazine last April. “I’ve just been wallowing in indie music for, like, a decade … I just thought I could keep going along in my funny little way, and then you casually respond to someone in a tweet and it’s on Fox News, and you’re like, ‘Ugh,’ you know? That was a very disturbing moment.”
Musk, in addition to welcoming his new son last month, also celebrated the first-ever commercial space mission in human history when his SpaceX company successfully sent two astronauts to the International Space Station.
