Berlin Gigafactory: Tesla Wants to Build Batteries

Last year, Tesla announced that its third car factory, Gigafabrica 4, would begin construction in Berlin in early 2020. At the moment, it is only known that the plant will be operational at the end of 2021, with its first model assigned to the SUV Medium Model Y, which will begin to be produced before at the Fremont factory and at the Gigafabrica 3 in Shanghai.

Tesla will build “future vehicles” at the facilities in addition to the Model 3 and Model Y. The factory will also be used to manufacture battery cells, unlike Shanghai Gigafactory 3, where packs equipped with cells produced by third parties are assembled. Tesla has already started looking for engineers for Gigafactory 4, which will be responsible for the development of “new detailed designs for the high-purity electrolyte to high-purity water systems.” Therefore, everything seems to indicate that the company will manufacture its design cells in its German facilities.

The Gigafabrica 4 in Berlin, once it is entirely built, will have three significant expansions concerning the initial project. The first phase will be completed in July 2021, and this section is responsible for the construction of the Model Y. The Model 3 will be produced in one of the three expansions of the factory. In total, the capacity of the plant will be 500,000 units per year.
