The Volvo Polestar was firstly announced as a competitor to the Tesla Model 3. Now it is coming to production in China.
Polestar 1 is a plug-in hybrid that was revealed in 2017, but it doesn’t seem to be an exciting vehicle when it comes to the market. What actually seems interesting about Volvo’s plans is the commitment to future EVs.
The company said:
“From the release of the Polestar 2, we’re going all-electric, and we’re never going back.”
The vehicles made in the Shanghai factory will be delivered worldwide.
Thomas Ingenlath, chief executive officer of Polestar, said:
“Here in Chengdu, we are not only manufacturing a premium hybrid-electric performance car. We have also created an inspirational manufacturing environment, a great place to work and visit. It truly reflects the Polestar brand. We promised we would have our first production facility built in 2019, we promised cars would be delivered to customers this year, and we promised we would do things differently — once again we are delivering on our promises. This is a hugely proud moment for the whole team at Polestar.”
The car will come to the market at the end of 2019 with 500 units made. Every year 500 Polestar models will be produced.
Volvo announced the price tag will be around $160,000.
