On the company roadmap, Rivian plans to put 20k to 40k cars on the streets by 2020. RJ Scaringe told The New York Times.
An old Mitsubishi car factory in Normal, Illinois, was bought and transform by Rivian into the first plant to manufacture the R1T.
Ford and Amazon are among the investors that injected $1 billion into the company. Both companies, however, have some interested in the success of the new electric car manufacturer. Amazon hopes to use the tech to deliver packages, and Ford wants all the help they can get to “electrify” the F-150.
“We’re inspired by Rivian’s vision for the future of electric transportation,” Amazon CEO Worldwide Consumer Jeff Wilke said in a release. “RJ has built an impressive organization, with a product portfolio and technology to match. We’re thrilled to invest in such an innovative company.”
The company has two models in the pipeline, R1T, the truck version and the R1S the SUV version. Both with specs almost too good to be true.
R1T and R1S will have three different batteries options:
105kWh – 203 miles of range, 0-60 in 4.9 seconds
135 kWh – 300+ miles of range, 0-60 in 3.0 seconds
180kWh – 400+ miles of range, 0-60 in 3.2 seconds
The base model of the truck will cost $69,000, and the SUV configuration will be slightly more expensive, starting with the price tag of $72,500.
