After Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced his company’s plans to build a a new smaller long-range electric car with its new battery technology starting at $25,000, we are now learning that Volkswagen is planning on doing the same.
Along with range anxiety, the price of an electric car alone plays a huge factor on whether or not consumers want to make the switch to e-mobility.
With the improvements seen in battery technology automakers are now beginning to reach higher performances and longer ranges at a lower price points, making EVs more affordable for the general public.
Now, along with Tesla, Volkswagen will join the California-based EV giant in producing a small BEV that will come to the market with a starting price between $25,000 and $30,000.
CEO Elon Musk announced Tesla new electric vehicle program in September stating: “Tesla will make a compelling $25,000 electric vehicle that is also fully autonomous.” The CEO gave it about a 3 year timeline, after its new battery cell production is up and running.
Today, Volkswagen has thrown its name into the hat with Tesla in producing a smaller, less expensive electric vehicles. According to Reuters, Volkswagen will introduce a new “small BEV” program with a starting price between $24,000 and $30,000: “Under the project dubbed “Small BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle)”, engineers are racing to develop a purely-battery powered car around the size of a Polo which will be available for between 20,000 and 25,000 euros ($24,000-30,000).”
Unfortunately, Volkswagen did not provide a timeline for the new, small BEV.
