NIO announced today during its “NIO Day” event that it will offer a new solid-state 150 kWh battery option for its electric vehicles. The Chinese automaker expects to begin deliveries of vehicles equipped with the new 150 kWh pack in Q4 of 2022.
When NIO first came to the EV scene in 2018, it presented with a 70 kWh battery. Soon after the automaker introduced a 84 kWh battery which was followed up by a 100 kWh introduced late last year. All of the batteries offered by the company this far have been swappable, meaning older cars can be equipped with higher capacity batteries. The 150 kWh is slated to be no different and will be an upgrade option for every NIO model: “All NIO users can opt to upgrade to 150 kWh.”
With the new 150 kWh battery comes more range of course. The first-generation 2018 NIO ES8 with a new 150 kWh battery will be able to achieve an NEDC range of over 730 km (454 miles). Upon its arrival, the 150 kWh batteries will give other NIO models a bump in range as well:
–NIO ES8 – 850 km (528 miles) NEDC
–NIO ES6 – 900 km (559 miles) NEDC
–NIO EC6 – 910 km (566 miles) NEDC
NIO also unveiled its brand new flagship sedan, the NIO ET7, during its NIO Day presentation. When equipped with the new 150 kWh battery, the automakers first electric sedan will have a NEDC range over 1,000 km (620 miles). However, being as that option won’t be available until late 2022, the first ET7 variant will be offered with 70 kWh and 100 kWh packs.
According to NIO, the new solid-state 150 kWh batteries have an ultra-high energy density of 360 Wh/kg. The new batteries, which include several technologies including Nickel-Ultrarich Cathode and Si/C Composite Anode, are expected to offer “good battery life” and “higher charging efficiency”:
