GMC Hummer EV Pre-Orders Cause GM to Consider Upping Production

Since its official launch in October, GM has been pretty hush hush about its plans for the first year of production of its GMC Hummer EV. However, thanks to some information that was leaked from a dealer meeting this week, we have a little more insight.

The all-electric “super-truck” was unveiled in late October with up to 350 miles of range and a starting price of $80,000. The “Edition 1” version of the electric pick-up truck is slated to launch next year with the base version not expected until 2024. According to the automaker, following the launch, the more expensive, fully-equipped “Edition 1” version sold out in just ten minutes

Some would say that is impressive but we never actually knew how many “Edition 1” Hummer EVs were made available to the public. However, with new information we’ve gained a better insight of the production capacity the company is planning, at least in the first year.

According to Detroit Free Press, GMC told dealers that it had 10,000 pre-orders for the Hummer EV Edition 1, meaning GM could produce as many as 10,000 Hummer EVs during the first year of production: “The dealers are on board in part because the Hummer Edition 1 already has 10,000 preorders. Also, GMC promises to have more EVs in the lineup beyond the Hummer pickup, including a Hummer SUV version that GM will officially reveal early next year and an all-electric Sierra pickup ‘soon.’”

A dealer who was present at the meeting said GM is considering increasing production: “The Hummer Edition 1 sold out in 10 minutes and they said they had enough orders for it to fulfill their first year of production currently, but they are evaluating if they can build more.”

The Hummer EV Edition 1 comes with a starting price of $112,595 and is expected to go into production in late 2021.
