Mercedes Targets Zero Emissions by 2040, Announces the Sale of 1,800 Electric Vans to Amazon

Daimler, the parent company of Mercedes-Benz, has confirmed its transformation plans to achieve a zero-emission proposal by 2040. A commitment that will cover all its vehicles from manufacturing to the end of life, extending this to its entire chain of value, including component suppliers.

Mercedes-Benz has joined the initiative sponsored by Amazon, The Climate Pledge, which seeks that activities such as transportation become neutral in emissions in two decades, which they indicate would mean advancing the climate agreements’ objectives by ten years from Paris.

According to Ola Källenius, President of Mercedes: “At Mercedes-Benz, we have set ourselves the ambitious goal of transforming mobility a success story. By joining ‘The Climate Pledge,’ we are building our goal of continually pursuing emission-free mobility and sustainable vehicle production. “

But of course, to be 100% electric, you have to start by having an offer of them. For this, Mercedes hopes to have up to five electric models available by the end of this year and 20 plug-in hybrids.

Amazon’s climate commitment

Coinciding with its joining the Climate Pledge initiative, the German manufacturer also announced that it had reached an agreement with Amazon itself for the delivery of just over 1,800 electric vans that will be used by the American company for its logistics work.

More than 1,200 eSprinter and 600 additional eVitos will be provided, plus units of a model that has been described as smaller, and possibly the new EQT.

An order that is one of Amazon’s first steps to electrify the gigantic and growing fleet of its delivery, in purchases that will mean adding 100,000 new 100% electric vehicles in the coming years, of which 10,000 will arrive in 2022, while that the remaining 90,000 will be incorporated until 2030.

Also, the idea is that this massive fleet of electric vehicles works with renewable energy. Amazon has committed to running 100% renewable energy by 2025. Globally, Amazon has 91 renewable energy projects that can generate more than 2,900 MW and deliver more than 7.5 million MWh annually.
