Mazda has just started production of the MX-30 at its Hiroshima, Japan, plant. The company’s first electric car can already be booked with a deposit starting at $1K, with deliveries expected to start this year.
This compact, 4.39-meter-long SUV is equipped with a 35.5 kWh battery, which ranges from 130 miles. Its 141 hp e-Skyactiv electric motor (105 kW) and 264 Nm of torque gradually deliver power, like a conventional car, as the Japanese brand wants the vehicle to be driven as an atmospheric-powered car.
The Mazda MX-30 can access loads of 50 kW of direct current power (CCS Combo 2 or CHAdeMO format, depending on the market), which will allow you to recover 80% of your autonomy in about 40 minutes. It is planned that a version with a range extender will be added later, which will have the Skyactiv-R rotary engine as a generator.
This vehicle, which will be key for the brand, will have a special First Edition that will be characterized by equipment such as 18-inch wheels, adaptive full LED headlights, and heated seats with eight positions and electrical configuration. It will also come equipped with a reversing camera, parking sensors, lane-keeping assistant, adaptive speed control, 8.8-inch center display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Head-Up Display, rain sensors and lights, and air conditioning controlled by a second touch screen.
In addition to this special finish, the MX-30 will be available in three finishes: Origin, Evolution, and Zenith. The starting price of this SUV will be 34,375 dollars. Even though it will offer a more limited autonomy than rivals in the same price range such as the KIA e-Niro, in exchange it will have a very personal exterior design (its small rear doors will be reverse gear) and a premium interior.
