Toyota and Subaru Will Collaborate to Develop an Electric SUV Platform

Toyota reached an agreement with its compatriot Subaru to jointly develop an electronic platform that will be dedicated to a future SUV of segment C.

This segment C electric SUV will be launched under both brands in the style of what Toyota and Subaru already did in the past with the Toyota GT86 and Subaru BRZ. Both Japanese manufacturers have also worked together to bring the Subaru Crosstrek Plug-in Hybrid to the US market, benefiting Subaru from extensive experience in hybrid technology.

This collaboration is another example of the need for manufacturers to create joint developments and share technologies to reduce the costs of producing an electric platform. In this way, Toyota could put the technology and Subaru manufacturing, as already happened in the case of the sports car Toyota GT86/Subaru BRZ.

It is also worth mentioning that Toyota has a 16.77% stake in the manufacturer Subaru, being the largest shareholder of the Japanese brand. The first collaborations between these two manufacturers date from 2005.
