Volvo has confirmed that it will build its battery factory to power the demand for its electric cars.
This first plant will be located in South Carolina, United States. It will be part of an investment of 1,100 million dollars that will allow the start of a battery production area designed to reduce delivery times and logistics costs of shipping these heavy elements. From that, Volvo expects to already be operational in 2021.
At the moment, the installation will be dedicated to the assembly and manufacture of packs. Meaning for now Volvo will continue to acquire the cells from its current supplier, LG, which already has a cell plant on American soil.
At the same time, Volvo has confirmed that it will expand the electric family with a third model. After the XC40 and the Polestar 2, this proposal will be based on the new platform called “Scalable Product Architecture” (SPA2). This will allow Volvo to continue with its strategy of offering all possible mechanical variants with the same platform. From pure-electric to gasoline and hybrid.
