A Tire That Restores the Power to a Car is Being Made by Sumitomo Rubber

The incredible tech by Sumitomo Rubber restores the energy of a car while it drives down the road.

As it goes down the road, the tires will deform. With such movement and the shapes constantly changingin, the equipment captures static electricity.

Sumitomo’s tires use frictional charging or the triboelectric effect. They are having two oppositely charged electrodes placed parallel with the surface of the tire. The electrodes make contact as the rotations, and it captures the static electricity, transmiting through a conductive layer, to a wire.

It is still a prototype, but using them with the EVs would make it eventually worth it, where the saves would be more significant.
